Frequently Asked Questions

ALE stands for additional living expenses. It refers to the coverage in an insurance policy for the increased costs of living incurred by a policyholder when they are temporarily displaced from their primary residence due to a covered event, such as a fire or natural disaster.

The amount of additional living expenses coverage varies depending on your insurance policy. Typically, it is a percentage of the dwelling coverage or a specific limit set within the policy. It is designed to cover the excess costs that exceed normal expenses, helping maintain a similar standard of living while displaced.

If you are unsure of your ALE coverage, we can work with your insurance adjuster directly to determine your coverage limits and ensure your temporary housing stays within ALE budgets.

Whether your temporary rental property is furnished depends on the situation. However, we typically get furnished housing for displacements of 6 months or less. For displacements over 6 months, we may furnish them with rental furniture for the entire displacement. Other times, we provide a few months of rental furniture to give you time to order replacement furniture.

At Accomsure, we want to ensure displaced policyholders can live comfortably without the immediate need to purchase new furniture or housewares during their temporary housing stay. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about furnished housing options.

ALE solutions typically include rent for post-disaster temporary housing, additional utility costs above normal (ie: if you still have to maintain hydro at your primary residence, hydro at your temporary residence is typically covered), storage fees, transportation costs if the temporary location is farther from work or school, and sometimes even pet boarding fees. Your adjuster will inform you of your coverage.
